The 6th of March, 1957 has gone down the annals of Ghana’s history and serves as a constant reminder of the declaration of the African being capable of managing his own affairs in Ghana’s attainment of independence.
The commemoration of this day has been an annual event and this year, Ghanaians celebrate the 65th anniversary which for the first time will be held in the central regional capital, Cape Coast.
In preparation for this national event, vice-chair of the Communication Subcommittee for the 65th Anniversary Celebration, Tally Ansah Asiedu indicates that plans are far advanced in readiness for the celebration.
According to him, the numerous programs scheduled ahead of the celebration all came through successfully with no hitches.
“…It has been extra successful. From the clean-up to the security route match. So far we are 95-97% ever ready to host this program,” he intimated.
He notes that the regiments and the other security forces are set and all arrangements as far as students who are supposed to match alongside cultural activities to feature are concerned and as far as design of Cape Coast to show are ready.
ATLFMNEWS’s Vera Siripi visited some areas in the metropolis and explained that streets lights have been well mounted in major parts of the metropolis lighting up the streets of cape coast.
Armored vehicles from the Army and Navy as well as horses to be used during parades on the day of the event are already on the grounds at the cape coast stadium, she said.
Streets leading to the Cape Coast Stadium which initially had potholes and cracks on them have also been fixed. This she explains signify the readiness of the metropolis for the 65th Independence Anniversary Celebration.
The hosting of this national event in cape coast comes with expectations from residents.
One of them sharing her thoughts with ATLFMNEWS said “I am really excited that we will be hosting the 65th Independence in Cape Coast and am looking forward to seeing really nice things in Cape Coast.
Another however said, “The standard of living has become so hard, fuel prices are making things difficult for everyone….we plead government to ensure that fuel issues are looked at.”
Another resident also in his view asked government to “practice what they preach and do the needful to benefit of everyone in the country.”
To Nana Kwame Edu VI, Tufuhen of Oguaa Traditional Area, it’s such pleasant news that Oguaa the former seat of government is playing host to such a memorable event. He says residents must extend warmth to guests who will be joining in the celebration.
He added by saying “where culture has been replanted let us take hold of it to wear made in Ghana, eat made in Ghana, dance made in Ghana, speak in Ghana and do things that are recommended so that our culture would not be lost”
On 6th March 1957, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first Prime Minister in Ghana from 1957 to 1960, during his tenure declared to the people of Ghana about their freedom saying “, “the African People are capable of managing their own affairs and Ghana our beloved country is free forever.”
This gave Ghana the feat of becoming the first sub-Saharan Africa to achieve its independence from European colonial rule.
