The first batch of Ghanaian students who were stranded due to the ongoing Ukraine crisis have safely arrived in Ghana.
The students numbering 17 arrived at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Tuesday morning aboard a Turkish Airline flight from Istanbul, Turkey, and Qatar Airways en route from Doha, the Capital of Qatar.
This makes Ghana the first African country to safely evacuate its citizens who have fled Ukraine due to the invasion by Russia which begun on February 24.
Officially, there are about 1000 Ghanaian students in Ukraine out of which 27 are on government scholarship while the rest are predominantly self-sponsored.
About 460 Ghanaian students in Ukraine are reported to have headed to Poland, Slovakia, Romania, and the Czech Republic. This is according to the Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Ministry.
At a media briefing on the security situation in Ukraine and the safety of Ghanaian nationals, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey said diplomatic missions and honorary consuls in the respective countries have been directed to facilitate the safe arrival of the students while efforts are made to prepare tickets for their safe return to Ghana.
