The Director for Youth and Development, Muhammed Saani Adams, has urged district assemblies to place proper value on their natural resources to attract investment and drive local development.
Speaking at a programme organised by the Strategic Youth Network for Development (SYND) and the Media Platform on Environment and Climate Change, Mr. Adams noted that many assemblies fail to recognise the true worth of their resources, citing sand winning as an example.
“This assembly is rich in sand, yet a trip is sold for less than GH₵100. It means we don’t actually understand the value of the natural resources we have,” he stated.
According to him, proper natural resource accounting would empower assemblies to leverage their assets to attract investors, secure contractual agreements, access loans, and initiate development projects without relying solely on central government.
“With the current stress in our fiscal space, these assemblies can help if we understand the value of the natural resources that they have,” Mr. Adams added.
The call highlights growing concerns about how Ghana’s natural resources are managed at the local government level, with stakeholders stressing the need for accountability and sustainable utilization to benefit communities directly.
