The world joins hands today to commemorate International Day of Education 2022.
The UN says though education remains a human right, about 258 million children and youth are still not attending school. In sub-Saharan Africa, less than 40% of girls complete lower secondary school and about 4 million children and youth refugees are out of school.
The theme chosen for this year’s celebration is “Changing Course, Transforming Education”.
In Ghana, the Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (IEPA), a UNESCO Category II Centre for West Africa, at the University of Cape Coast, joins other UNESCO Educational Centres to celebrate this day.
At IEPA, SDG 4, which is to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”, is at the heart of its operations.
Director-General of IEPA- UCC, Dr. Boakye-Yiadom believes the theme is vital to promoting education in Ghana.
According to him, though Ghana has made strides in education, relevant changes need to be made to rally with the ever-evolving dynamics of education across the globe.
At the University of Cape Coast, for instance, Dr. Boakye-Yiadom notes students are being trained to develop critical thinking skills to be innovative, develop cultural competencies, have strategic communication and interpersonal skills on issues of integrity and diversities as well as inclusion in education.
This, he explains, will enable graduates to perform well in the field of work and compete with other graduates globally.
“We are hoping that as we change course, we will be able to integrate these things and help our students to develop these strategic and global citizenship skills that we aspire to achieve,” he said.
The United Nations General Assembly on December 3, 2018, proclaimed 24th January as International Day of Education, and this year’s celebration is expected to be a platform to showcase the most important transformations that have to be nurtured to realize everyone’s fundamental right to education and build a more sustainable, inclusive and peaceful future.
