Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating malaria, adopting “Health Equity: The Cornerstone for Achieving Malaria Elimination in Ghana” as its theme for World Malaria Day 2024.
The theme conforms with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Roll Back Malaria Partnership’s focus on finding solutions to the disease that adversely affects the vulnerable including pregnant women, children under 5 years and people in rural communities.
World Malaria Day is commemorated annually on April 25 to recognize global efforts to control /eliminate malaria and showcase achievements in this regard among the diverse initiatives on the Global front.
Earlier, Ghana launched its National Malaria Elimination Strategic Plan 2024-2028 providing a roadmap that could lead to prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
The plan of National Malaria Elimination Strategic Plan 2024-2028 is to reduce malaria incidence by 50%, have a 90% reduction in malaria mortality and eliminate malaria in 21 low-burden districts by 2028.
In recognizing the need for these continuous efforts in the country, the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health have expressed readiness in their continuous partnerships to develop and implement innovative interventions to drive the elimination agenda.
A statement issued and signed by DR. PATRICK KUMA-ABOAGYE Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, revealed an outline of activities earmarked to “raise awareness to raise awareness, improve the adoption of promotive, preventive and curative interventions, address inequities, advocate for more resources, improve policies, and encourage community ownership of the malaria elimination agenda.”
The activities include activating social media platforms, media engagements, a health walk/Float and a community durbar on April 25 at Krowar in the Greater Accra Region.
