WhatsApp has rolled out a range of updates aimed at enhancing users’ messaging and calling experiences, intensifying competition with services like Telegram and Discord.
One notable addition is the “Online” indicator at the top of group chats, showing how many participants are currently available to chat.
The app now also includes a “Notify for” setting that allows users to highlight specific notifications, choosing between “Highlights” for @mentions and replies from saved contacts, or “All” for every notification.
iPhone users can now scan and send documents directly through the app by selecting “scan document” from attachment options and following the prompts to scan, crop, and save.

Additionally, iPhone users can set WhatsApp as their default messaging and calling app and can now pinch to zoom during video calls.
WhatsApp has improved its technology for video calls, aiming for higher reliability and quality, which should reduce dropped calls and video freezing. Enhanced bandwidth detection should also support HD-quality video calls.
While users have been able to create events in group chats for some time, the option is now available for 1:1 conversations as well. The events feature has been updated to allow RSVPs as “maybe,” invites for a plus one, and the ability to add an end date and time, along with event pinning for easier access.
Moreover, users can now add someone to an ongoing 1:1 call directly from a chat by tapping the call icon and selecting “Add to call.”
Channels are receiving three updates: admins can record and share short videos with followers, share unique QR codes linking to their channel, and receive written summaries of voice message updates to stay informed when they’re on the go.
