WhatsApp has announced a new AI feature that enables users to rephrase, proofread, and adjust the tone of their messages. This feature, called “Writing Help,” utilizes Meta’s Private Processing technology, ensuring that original messages and AI-generated suggestions remain confidential and are not accessible to Meta or WhatsApp.
With Writing Help, users can receive AI-generated suggestions that rework messages in various styles, including professional, humorous, or supportive tones.
WhatsApp showcased the feature through an example message: “Please don’t leave dirty socks on the sofa.” The AI provided amusing alternatives like, “Please don’t make the sofa a sock graveyard,” “Breaking news: Socks found chilling on the couch. Please move them,” and “Hey, sock ninja, the laundry basket is that way!”

This launch aims to encourage users to leverage WhatsApp’s in-app capabilities instead of relying on external tools like ChatGPT.
However, some users may prefer authentic, personal interactions with friends and family rather than AI-generated content. While using AI to rewrite an email might be acceptable, many may find it less suitable for messaging loved ones.
To access the new feature, users can tap the pencil icon that appears when composing a message in the app. Writing Help will be available in English in select countries starting Wednesday.
