The Municipal Chief Executive of Komenda, Edina, Eguafo Abirem (KEEA), Solomon Ebo Appiah says his outfit has not relented on its effort in making Elimina the cleanest city in Ghana.
According to him, the Municipal Assembly is still on course to achieve this sanitation goal and has rolled out measures to that effect.
In an exclusive interview with ATL FM NEWS at the launch of the 2023 Edina Bakatue, he mentioned that arresting and prosecuting those who do open defecation is one of the measures his outfit has introduced to promote sanitation at Elmina.
He, however, lamented the failure of the citizens of Elmina to provide the assembly with the needed support as it works to curb the sanitation problems in Elmina.
“We are still on course. We rolled out a plan that if you arrest anybody with open defecation, bring the person to the assembly and the assembly will give you GHS 200. Up till now, we haven’t received any of such thing that we made mention of.”
Meanwhile, during the launch of the festival at Royal Elmount Hotel and Resort, the Omanhen of Edina Traditional Area, Nana Kodwo Condua VI lamented how the Assembly is looking on for street hawkers to dump refuse in drainage systems among other sanitation problems caused by some residence of Elmina.
He however commended individuals who are helping to promote sanitation in the Municipality and challenged the Assembly to support them since achieving sanitation requires a collective effort.
Responding to the call by Nana Kodwo Condua VI, Mr. Ebo Appiah said the call is in the right direction.
“For us, we believe that cleanliness is next to Godliness. And for us, at the Municipal Assembly, Elmina being a tourist hub in Ghana, we have a role to play when it comes to sanitation. And I believe that the call of Nana is in the right direction. We are not going to sleep and we are going to work hand in hand together with him to make sure that Elmina becomes the cleanest city in Ghana.”
On the part of the assembly, he said they have strengthened their bylaws and they will ensure anyone found culprit of sanitation and open defecation issues will be prosecuted.
