The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana is optimistic that a meeting with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) set for tomorrow, June 9, 2021, would result in a favourable conclusion.
The Commission has asked the association’s leaders to a meeting in order to discuss matters related to their continuing strike.
In an interview with Citi News, the Association’s National President, Zakaria Mohammed, said that if the discussions go smoothly, the strike would be called off.
“At this time, the strike is continuing in full swing. We are confident that the meeting will result in a satisfactory solution, allowing us to call off the strike.”
“All of our negotiating team members have arrived in Accra for tomorrow’s meeting. We are awaiting the conclusion of the meeting so that we can determine the next course of action.”
Because the government has failed to pay its Tier 2 pension, the Association has launched an indefinite strike.
They are requesting, among other things, the award of market premium and non-basic allowance, as well as the completion of discussions on their service conditions.
Meanwhile, the group has requested that the government stop all types of harassment and threats directed at its members.
In a statement, the organization said that certain university administrations had resorted to “vigorous intimidation and threat techniques against certain of its striking members, with the only goal of coercing and creating fear and terror among its rank and file.”
The group warned that if the practice continues, it might “possibly destabilize the industrial harmony among the country’s public universities.”
“We wish to serve notice to these individuals to desist from such acts of industrial violations and allow industrial democracy to thrive in Ghana or risk incurring the wrath of the Senior Staff Associations across all the 10 public universities in Ghana,” the statement added.
