The Ministry of Roads and Highways has issued a clarification to an earlier directive that resulted in the cessation of road and bridge toll collection on the country’s highways.
According to the press release, the prior remark was issued as a result of an unfortunate situation that occurred at the various toll booths. Drivers refused to pay tolls after the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, stated during the 2022 budget reading that toll booths along major routes would be closed down.
The budget for 2022 proposed to parliament was meant to be approved before it went into force. Drivers’ reluctance to pay tolls after the reading, on the other hand, caused the ministry to issue a press statement on Wednesday, November 17th, asking for a stop to the collecting of road and bridge tolls.
“Unfortunately, the Minister of Finance’s statement either got misunderstood or misinterpreted by some motorists, as many of them deemed the statement as having an immediate effect and therefore decided not to pay the road and bridge tolls. The insistence of the toll collected to have the tolls paid caused serious confusion and in some cases, resulted in fisticuffs and damage to lives and property,” the statement said.
To avoid any further unfortunate incidents from happening, the press statement was released to the public to “suspend the operationalization of the collection of tolls and not to suspend the law”.
