National chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo says the NDC’s decision not to accept the result of any “flawed election” is not because it anticipates defeat.
His comments come at the back of the remarks by the former president and flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama who disclosed the intentions of the party not to accept the results of a ‘flawed election’.
Mr Mahama, speaking at a flag-raising ceremony to commemorate the NDC’s 28th anniversary yesterday mentioned that the party strives to ensure that the country remains peaceful and electoral processes go on without challenges, however it will only accept the result of elections it does not see as credible.
“As the leader of the NDC, I wish to serve notice that we shall do our part to ensure that our country remains peaceful and the electoral process proceeds smoothly. But, and a big but, let nobody assume that we will accept the results of a flawed election’, Mr. Mahama said.

Mr. Ofosu Ampofo, in an interview on Radio Ghana clarifying the flagbearer’s remarks said the party is very hopeful of winning the general elections on condition that the processes are fair not because it is smelling defeat.
“We are very confident of victory but want the level playing field to be created for this election. Election is a process and not an event and so when you see any warning signs, you need to give clear indication”, he said.
The Chairman mentioned that from the decision to compile a new voters’ exercise to the recent pilot exercise of the compilation of the register , the Commission has not given them enough reasons to trust the process.
“All the system that have been put in place so far do not put enough confidence in the system the electoral commission is using’, he said.
“Six months to the elections, you don’t even know which register we are going to use. We don’t know how the electoral commission in less than six months will be able to conduct a mass registration of new voters and be able to complete and get a register that reflects the reality on the ground”, the chairman said.
The National Democratic Congress has opposed the compilation of a new voters’ register since the EC’s announcement, arguing that it will disenfranchise majority of eligible voters. The NDC wants the voters ID card to be included as a primary requirement for registration, but is yet to see the light of day.
The Electoral Commission, has however made a provision for individuals who do not bear any of the primary requirement to have two guarantors to back their claim
Meanwhile parliament has voted to give the EC a go ahead to compile a new register for the elections. The EC says it will commence the compilation of the new voters register on 30th June.
