Wallabies suffer blow as Valetini & Skelton miss first Test, leaving Australia with key gaps ahead of their clash with the British and Irish Lions in Brisbane on Saturday. Injuries continue to challenge the Wallabies, with influential forwards Will Skelton and Rob Valetini ruled out due to calf issues, although head coach Joe Schmidt is hopeful they will return for the second Test in Melbourne.

Skelton and Valetini Ruled Out

Both Skelton and Valetini missed the win against Fiji two weeks ago and haven’t recovered in time for the Lions opener. Schmidt explained that while they could have risked the players if it were the series decider, it was wiser to hold them back to avoid further setbacks. Flanker Langi Gleeson, who has a dead leg, is also expected to return for the second Test.

Nick Champion de Crespigny Debuts

To fill the gap, Schmidt has handed a debut to 29-year-old Western Force back row Nick Champion de Crespigny. He joins Fraser McReight and captain Harry Wilson in the back row, forming a new dynamic trio. Schmidt highlighted Nick’s strong lineout ability and scavenging style, which will complement McReight’s game while Wilson takes on additional ball-carrying responsibilities.

Changes in the Squad

The Wallabies have made four changes from the team that defeated Fiji 21-18. Carlo Tizzano and Tom Hooper are set to come off the bench, adding depth and carrying power to the team. In the backs, Tom Lynagh is set to start at out-half in place of Noah Lolesio, marking his first start for the Wallabies in what will be his fourth cap. Lynagh follows in the footsteps of his father, Michael, who also played against the Lions at out-half in 1989.

Schmidt Backs Young Lynagh

Schmidt expressed confidence in the 22-year-old Lynagh, emphasising his defensive bravery and aerial skills, noting that familiarity with the Brisbane stadium will help him settle quickly. Schmidt hopes Lynagh can dictate the pace of the game while acknowledging the challenge of facing a strong Lions side.

Other Key Selections

Jake Gordon starts at scrum-half alongside Lynagh, with Tate McDermott moving to the bench to form a new half-back partnership. The Wallabies will rely on experienced props James Slipper and Alan Ala’alatoa, with Matt Faessler stepping in at hooker. Nick Frost and Jeremy Williams will continue their partnership in the second row. In the backline, Len Ikitau and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii pair in midfield, while Harry Potter and Max Jorgensen will take the wings, with Tom Wright at fullback for the 14th time in the last 15 Tests.

Looking Ahead

Australia now faces a significant test against Andy Farrell’s Lions, hoping to build on their win against Fiji despite missing key players. Schmidt’s selections reflect a blend of experience and emerging talent, aiming to keep the Wallabies competitive in a high-stakes opener.
