The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has defended its decision to withhold some 2024 WASSCE results, stating that the process follows due procedure and is not an arbitrary action by individual staff members.
This comes after the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) announced a planned demonstration on Tuesday, February 25, to protest against WAEC’s actions, which they claim have unfairly affected some candidates.
Responding to the concerns, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, emphasized that while NUGS has every right to protest, the council has acted in accordance with its mandate.
“NUGS has the constitutional right to demonstrate against whatever they feel. But in our press conference, we indicated clearly that no single staff of the council unilaterally decides to withhold or cancel results,” he stated in an interview with Citi News.

He explained that WAEC follows strict procedures when making decisions regarding withheld results.
“Whenever we have to make decisions, we refer those decisions to the appropriate committees of the council, and that is what we have been doing over the years. And so I would say that we have not arbitrarily been unjust to anybody as far as our operations are concerned,” he added.
Despite WAEC’s justification, NUGS remains resolute in its demand for accountability, arguing that the decision to withhold results after university admissions have closed is unfair to affected students. The student union has also indicated its intention to take legal action against WAEC if the issue is not resolved.
With the upcoming protest, tensions remain high between WAEC and student groups, as affected candidates and their families await further clarification on the status of their results.
