The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has expressed concern over the arrest of 16 individuals for alleged examination malpractices during the ongoing Basic Certificate Examination (BECE).
WEAC in a statement noted that despite the stern warnings against mobile phone usage at examination centres, some defied the directive.
The Centre said they have so far arrested 16 teachers have so far been arrested for such infractions and are being processed for court.
The arrests come just days after the BECE commenced on Monday, July 8th. Prior to the exam, District Directors of Education and supervisors were briefed on new rules, including a strict ban on mobile phones within examination centres.
WAEC indicated at the Save our Souls Educational Centre, Bekwai three teachers and two individuals unrelated to the exam were arrested for attempting to assist students.
Also, at the Jinijini Senior High School, two invigilators were apprehended for taking photos of the English Language question paper and sharing them on a WhatsApp group.
Nkoranza Senior High School also recorded an invigilator caught with a phone containing answers to the Religious and Moral Education exam.
At the Chemu Senior High School, Tema, a teacher was arrested for taking photos of question papers and posting them online while at the Liberty Hills School, an invigilator was apprehended for taking pictures of the Science exam paper.
Additionally, at the Jachie Pramso SHS, two invigilators were arrested, one with a phone and the other with pieces of paper containing answers to the English Language exam and the Santoe Basic School also recorded four teachers from DESVY International School caught on their school bus attempting to solve the Science exam for their students.
According to WAEC, the culprits were arrested by the NIB and locally recruited agents by WAEC and handed over to the police and being processed for court.
