Dr. Nana Derby of the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at Virginia University in the United States of America has emphasized that success lies through perseverance.
To her, students should not only navigate the university environment but fully immerse themselves in the university experience. adding that “being in the university is a temporary situation in their lives.”
“I mean I came to the university thinking I was going to be an economist working in the World Bank And, now I ended up as a sociologist teaching criminal justice so they don’t know where they are going to be so they should just allow the university to pass through them. This is a temporary situation in their lives.”
Dr. Nana Derby spoke in an interview with ATL FM during a courtesy call by a delegation from Virginia State University on the management of the University of Cape Coast and a meet and greet with staff of the Campus Broadcasting Services Centre where she once worked with ATLFM.
On her part, Dr. Tia A. Menace, Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Virginia State University said the visit is to foster an exchange relationship with the University of Cape Coast.
According to her, there is a synergy between courses offered at Virginia State University and UCC acknowledging the potential of learning and growth from the partnership as she expresses the desire to leverage that opportunity.
“The other part is understanding how we can partner with the institution to allow for different opportunities for our students and your students and for our faculty to engage in research and teaching and having the entire learning process. And so, we are really here to learn and to embrace and to find ways to really develop partnerships with the institution.
Additionally, she said the visit is also for students of Virginia State University to experience cultural immersion.
“I think the cultural experience for our students that’s the biggest difference and be able to have them do that. And so, for us really having our students come here is important.”
Dr. Daniel Roberts, Dean, Honors College International Education emphasized that collaboration and strengthening education come from partnerships.
He hinted that the main aim of collaborating with the University is to see their students have experiences.
“We welcome our Ghanaian students to our campus and we have Ghanaian students among our international students. So, it’s one of the things that the more we do them, the better we are going to be. And we look forward to doing more with the University of Cape Coast.”
