The recent passing of Pope Francis has sparked renewed interest in the film “Conclave,” which explores the process of selecting a new pope.
Released last year, “Conclave” is currently available on Amazon Prime Video, and its viewership has surged by 283%, according to data from Luminate. The analytics company reported that the film generated approximately 1.8 million minutes of viewing on April 20. Following Pope Francis’s death at age 88 on April 21, that figure rose to 6.9 million minutes.
Starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, Isabella Rossellini, and John Lithgow, “Conclave” delves into the behind-the-scenes drama among senior figures in the Roman Catholic Church during the papal selection process. The film is based on the 2016 novel of the same name.
“Conclave” was a standout during the recent awards season, winning the BAFTA for Best Film, while its writer, Peter Straughan, received the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Interest in Vatican-themed films has also spiked overall. According to Variety, Netflix’s 2019 drama “The Two Popes,” featuring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, has seen a 417% increase in viewership.
“Conclave” is available for streaming on Prime Video and can also be rented or purchased on platforms like Apple TV+.
