Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has assured that government will assist victims of the deadly explosion which occurred on Thursday 20th January 2022 at Apiate in the Western Region.
Leading government delegation to assess the situation, the Vice- President commiserated with victims and said government will cover all injured persons’ medical expenses.
He further lauded state security agencies for their effort in rescuing victims at the scene adding that the government is working collaboratively with State Housing Corporation and the mining companies to ensure that houses that were destroyed in the community would be restored at the expense of government.
Speaking to the press, he indicated that “for the houses that have been destroyed, we are already beginning to think about how to rehabilitate and rebuild for the community here. So I want to assure you that his Excellency the President has given us directives and, I’ve already spoken to the State Housing Corporation in consultation with the mining companies around here, we will quickly try to put in place facilities that will help those who have been displaced.”
In addition, government has dispatched a joint team of police and military explosive specialists to assess the situation and implement the necessary safeguards.
According to preliminary police investigations, a vehicle bringing explosives to a mining site collided with a motorcycle, causing the explosion.
Meanwhile, it’s been verified that the truck which exploded belongs to MAXAM, a mining services provider, and was on its way to the Chirano Gold Mines.
