The University Teachers Association of Ghana, University of Cape Coast Branch (UTAG-UCC), has issued a pressing appeal following a disturbing pattern of fatal road accidents along the Cape Coast-Takoradi Highway, particularly near the University’s East, Central, and West gates.

UTAG-UCC is by this release extending its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families affected by these unfortunate accidents.
The association underscores the critical need for swift intervention from relevant authorities including the Honorable Central Regional Minister, the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), the Department of Urban Roads (DUR), the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, and the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North.
Recent incidents, including the fatal accident on June 18, 2024, in which a PhD student lost his life to a speeding vehicle at the East Gate, highlight the urgency of the situation.
The association said the frequent collisions and incidents demand immediate measures to enhance safety and prevent further loss of life and urged all stakeholders to prioritize the safety of road users in this area.
UTAG-UCC proposes a comprehensive action plan to address these accidents’ root causes, including speed limit enforcement, traffic light installations, pedestrian crosswalks, terminal or bus stops and footbridges.
