Janean Davis, the Acting Mission Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Ghana, said today that the country would receive $24.7 million in new funding to assist immunization activities across the country as part of the Initiative for Global Vaccine Access (Global VAX).
The money from USAID will help to speed up the distribution of safe and effective COVID-19 immunizations throughout Ghana.
Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director General of the Ghana Health Service, and senior Ghana Health Service officials joined USAID Ghana Acting Mission Director Janean Davis to make the announcement at the Greater Accra Regional (Ridge) Hospital.
“The bottom line is that vaccines are safe, effective, and readily available in Ghana. We realize, however, that the donation of vaccines is not enough.
“That’s why, today, I am excited to announce on behalf of the U.S. government an additional $24.7 million to Ghana to accelerate the delivery of safe and effective Covid-19 vaccinations as part of Global VAX,” said Acting USAID Ghana Mission Director Janean Davis.
Acting Mission Director Janean Davis also confirmed the arrival in Ghana on March 21 of roughly two million new Pfizer Covid-19 vaccines.
Since September 2021, the US has given over 9.6 million Covid-19 vaccines to Ghana, accounting for more than 30% of all vaccines available in the country.
More than 500 million vaccine doses have been supplied by the United States worldwide, including 144 million doses to 43 nations in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Global VAX is a US government initiative aimed at helping to achieve the global objective of vaccinating 70% of the population of every country against Covid-19 by 2022.
It’s a whole-of-government strategy that builds on President Biden’s astounding pledge to give more than 1.2 billion vaccine doses by the end of 2022 and ramps up efforts to get vaccines into the hands of those who need them.
Global VAX refers to the US government’s collaboration with over 100 countries in every part of the globe to enhance Covid-19 vaccine use.
It will also include a massive influx of financial, technical, and diplomatic assistance to an initial group of countries with major needs and the promise for quick success, with an emphasis on Sub-Saharan Africa initially.
