The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rosemond Boohene, has advised fresh students to cultivate and maintain the core values of academic excellence, empowerment, equality and ethical behaviour to enable them succeed in the University.
She reminded the students that their level of commitment to academic work would determine their performance in all assessments and examinations at the end of each semester.
Prof. Boohene, therefore, challenged the students to tap into the rich knowledge of professors, senior lecturers and lecturers in the University to achieve their academic dreams.
The Pro Vice-Chancellor made the remarks during the 2022/2023 matriculation ceremony to admit 8,721 students in the University.
“The number is made up of seven thousand, eight hundred and thirty-six (7836) undergraduates and Eight hundred and eighty-five (885) postgraduates,” she continued.
According to the Pro Vice-Chancellor, the total number of undergraduate students is made up of 3,448 females and 4,388 males, whilst postgraduate admission also had 319 females and 566 males.
Prof. Boohene added that being bonafide students of the University, the students were guaranteed the rights and privileges of studentship, having subscribed to the oath of allegiance of the University.
She said the new environment would come with all the “freedom” but that must be used responsibly.
She entreated the students to observe personal safety precautions and urged them to strictly adhere to rules and regulations in the Students’ Handbook. Touching on students’ residential facility on campus, the Pro Vice-Chancellor noted that the “Management of the University is doing everything possible to ensure that students experience a congenial atmosphere for both social and academic work.”
Prof. Boohene used the occasion to tout the remarkable achievements of the University to the fresh students, mentioning that UCC was ranked number one in Ghana and West Africa, fourth in Africa and 24th in Research influence and globally among 200 universities in the 2022 by the World University index ranking.
She lauded the athletes who participated in the 2022 Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
The ceremony, which was held at the New Examination Centre, was also streamed live for the benefit of other students in the halls of residence.
