The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana has announced that it would go on strike on May 18, 2021.
The organization clarified that the move was made in response to the government’s refusal to resolve its representatives’ complaints after they called off a similar move earlier this year.
The planned strike is motivated by the government’s failure to compensate the association’s members’ tier-2 pension arrears, market premiums, and non-basic allowances, among other things.

Speaking to Citi News, the National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana, Zakaria Mohammed, confirmed that their members would go on strike on that day, and that no skeletal staff would be called back to function after their strike.
“We will begin the strike on May 18th, 2021. We sent a letter to the Labour Commission, as required by labour laws, giving them seven working days’ notice. The government has refused to comply with the Labour Commission’s suggestions. There would be an exacerbated action because the previous time we went on strike, retiring employees were placed in the principal offices. “This time, we will make certain that no skeletal staff is placed in principal offices,” he said.
The Association called a strike in February 2021 on the same issues, but was compelled to call it off after the National Labour Commission obtained an interlocutory injunction from the High Court, Labour Division, against them.
The NLC had earlier given a directive that the government should do everything possible to pay the outstanding pension arrears to the Association by end of March 2021.
The Commission also directed parties to continue negotiations and report to it by the end of April 2021.
A statement issued by the association catalogued their issues below:
1. Non-payment of our tier 2 pension arrears (2010-2016)
2. Market premium and non-basic allowance
3. Failure by Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to finalise negotiations on our conditions of service
