The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana has said that it would consult with its National Executive Council, NEC, to determine whether or not to comply with the National Labour Commission’s order to end its countrywide strike.
On Thursday, August 5, 2021, the NLC issued a directive informing the Association and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission that their issues will be addressed.
However, in an interview, Mohammed Zakaria, President of the Senior Staff Association of Universities in Ghana, said that the Association would continue to press until their issues are addressed.
“On matters regarding the conditions of service, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has been given one month within which to finalize everything, and this time we have again asked the NLC to exercise its authority when the parties are found to be flouting the directives that have been issued.”
“So they [NLC] want us to call off the strike immediately, and I am going to call for a National Executive Council meeting and together determine whether to call off the strike or not.”
Meanwhile, the Ghana Association of University Administrators is asking the government to handle labor agitations from all labor organizations holistically.
The appeal was made by the organization’s National President, Kwabena Antwi-Konadu.
“…Saying that you are dealing with one group in terms of their conditions of service, you are likely to create more problems because as soon as you finish with one and the other one is not satisfied, they will raise issues. So the idea is for government to settle conditions of service of all these categories holistically.”
