In a vibrant display of tradition and community spirit, ATL FM reaffirmed its dedication to the local fishing industry and unity of the Asafo companies by organizing the much-anticipated Oguaa Fetu Afahye Regatta.
The Cape Coast Community Garden came alive as thousands of people from traditional rulers to residents, students, and international tourists gathered to witness the 2025 ATL FM Oguaa Fetu Afahye Regatta.
The annual canoe race which is a highlight of the 61st Oguaa Fetu Afahye celebration, once again delivered a thrilling spectacle as the three Asafo Companies Nkum No. 4, Bentsir No. 1, and Anaafo No. 2 battled fiercely on the Fosu Lagoon.
This year’s festival is being celebrated under the theme: “Innovate to Elevate: Harnessing the Creative Economy for Sustainable Growth.”
As tradition demands, the regatta opened with a symbolic lagoon tour by Nananom (traditional leaders), sponsors, and dignitaries, accompanied by women adorned in elegant “tekua” who displayed beautifully on the waters showcasing the cultural pride and heritage of Oguaaman before the race commenced.

The canoe contest that followed was nothing short of thrilling, with supporters cheering loudly from the banks of the fosu lagoon.
When the paddles finally rested, Nkum No. 4 Asafo Company secured their dominance for the fourth consecutive year, amassing nine points to clinch the trophy, medals, and a cash prize. Anaafo No. 2 followed with five points, while Bentsir No. 1 finished third with four points.
Speaking with joy after their victory, members of Nkum No. 4 expressed pride in their legacy, declaring that their hard work and team spirit have kept them on top since 2022, noting “Winning four times in a row is no accident, it is proof of our determination and unity. We promise Cape Coast that this is just the beginning of more victories to come,” a jubilant team member said.
Delivering the opening remarks on behalf of UCC Vice-Chancellor Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, Acting Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Kwabena Antwi-Konadu, congratulated Oguaaman for sustaining the festival’s global relevance.
“The Oguaa Fetu Afahye is more than a local celebration; it is an international event. Let us all contribute to making it bigger each year, so that Cape Coast continues to attract the attention it deserves,” he urged.
Ten corporate sponsors supported this year’s regatta and pledged continued partnership to ensure its success in the years ahead.
In an interview with ATLFM News, Enoch Amoah from the Marketing Department of Promasidor Ghana explained that the company’s partnership with ATL FM is driven by the opportunity to promote and advertise its products effectively.
The regatta has become a signature tradition of ATL FM, reinforcing its commitment to the fishing communities and promoting unity among the Asafo companies, while also highlighting the cultural wealth of Cape Coast.
The 61st Oguaa Fetu Afahye officially opened with an Akwaaba Carnival on August 31st and will climax on Saturday, September 6, 2025, with a grand durbar of chiefs and people.
As the sound of drums, cheers, and paddles fades, one thing is certain: the regatta remains a powerful symbol of identity, resilience, and celebration for the people of Oguaaman.
