The Senior Staff Association and the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union at the University of Ghana have issued a stern warning of potential strike action.
The unions demand the settlement of unpaid Interim Market Premium for some staff, dating back to 2010-2018, by December 13th.
Despite efforts, including legal measures, to resolve this issue, the university management has yet to address these arrears.
Isaac Donkor, the National Chairman of the Association, in an interview, expressed the unions’ frustration.
He highlighted that despite a court order and several deadlines set by the National Labour Commission, the university has continually failed to make these payments.
Mr. Donkor emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that the value of the unpaid funds has diminished over time and that union members are growing increasingly impatient.
He warned that if the university does not meet the December 13th deadline, staff are prepared to cease work.
Mr. Donkor emphasizes that the owed remuneration is long overdue and highlights the various financial responsibilities such as school fees and medical bills that remain unsettled due to the delayed payments.
The tenacious efforts and negotiations of the unions have seemingly been met with repetitive delays and inaction, prompting their decision to escalate the matter further. This action comes after a series of engagements and meetings with the National Labour Commission, where the unions perceived continued postponement and prolongation of the resolution process.
