The School of Medical Sciences at the University of Cape Coast has held its 12th white coat ceremony with a call on medical students to adhere to a high standard of professionalism in the discharge of their duty.

The White Coat Ceremony symbolizes the medical profession and forms an integral part of the Medical School’s calendar.

The ceremony is reserved for students who have completed their pre-clinical training and are being transitioned into full clinical training in medical school.

Addressing the students on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, the Provost of the College of Distance Education, Professor Isaac Galyuon advised the students to employ a high sense of discipline and professional ethics as they begin a new phase in the journey to become medical doctors.

He emphasized that the white coat ceremony is ushering them into the clinical stage of their training adding that “at this stage, you are entrusted with human beings rather than manikins…wherever you find yourself you are expected to demonstrate a high sense of discipline, education, love and care for humanity.”

He called on stakeholders, government institutions, and other benevolent organizations to support the medical school to improve upon their infrastructures to help the university train, top-quality professionals.

According to him, most of the projects earmarked for professional training and related activities by the school of medical sciences have stalled for years hence the call for support.

A Board member of the Ghana Medical and Dental Council, Dr. Ernest Yorke delivering a speech on behalf of the chairman of the Ghana Medical and Dental Council also advised the students to adopt the attitude of humility, confidentiality, and truth that comes with adorning the white coat.

He further urged them to be guided by the principle of treating all their patients as they will treat their close family members and hold them, dear, to their hearts in order to win the trust and confidence of their patients and also avoid unnecessary litigations.

The white coat ceremony is an iconic ritual that has become a symbolic hallmark of health care institutions around the world. It is meant to inspire the zeal in students about beginning their careers in the field of medicine.
