The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Cape Coast has held a Dean’s award ceremony for its student pharmacists and biochemists in honour of the late Dean of the School, Professor David Darko Obiri.
Speaking at the Awards ceremony, the Vice Dean of the School, Dr. Robert Peter Biney said the award was put together to encourage student pharmacists and biochemists to continue working hard toward becoming renowned practitioners in the medical field.
He explained that the late Professor David Darko Obiri pushed the agenda for student pharmacists and biochemists to be recognized and awarded since it will push them to work harder in their studies.
The Central Regional Manager of the Pharmacy Council, Pharmacist Ishmael Damoah-Aferi encouraged Students in the Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical sciences to learn hard and invest in good books.
He said this will help them gain more knowledge outside the medical field.
“One thing our former registrar used to say is that the day you stop learning you become a danger to society… there are a lot of things you are going to get in the books you see on the street. Sometimes you meet them in the traffic when you are traveling, GHC 15, GHC 25 and they tell you the experiences of great men though they may not be related to our culture. But then you can pick one or two things from there and they will really help you” he said.
To him, higher institution education is to make them trainable and not pharmacists and they must endeavour to read widely to improve their knowledge.
Meanwhile, an awardee, a level 200 Student Pharmacist, Mrs. Grace Naa Lamley Mills, was recognized and awarded the overall best student as well as the best female student for level 200.
She encouraged her colleagues to invest in good planning, consistency in reading lesson notes, and effective time management.
This, she says, will help them excel in their studies and all endeavours.
In all 9 students were given awards in the category of best-performing student, most improved student, and overall best student among others.
The deserving students – from Level 200 to 400, were awarded in recognition of their efforts and distinguishing themselves academically.
