The University of Cape Coast School of Business has held its 2024 Dean’s Award ceremony, honouring outstanding students with a GPA of 3.6 and above.
This initiative aims to motivate students to strive for academic excellence and professional growth.
During the event, the school’s dean, Prof John Gartchie Gatsi, congratulated the awardees and emphasized the importance of developing practical skills for success in the corporate world.
He notes that recruiters are more interested in the skills they have acquired adding “And that is why we have placed skills development as an important integral of our training here (UCC).”
According to him, research conducted by Coursera, which runs online programmes indicates that skills acquisition is now important for those in employment.
“We are influenced by artificial intelligence and e-commerce stands at the first position. So, we have a lot of work to do to ensure that we provide a minimum to our students before they leave here,” he said.
Professor Gatsi also highlighted a concerning trend of declining enrolment in postgraduate studies by the school and added that efforts are in place to enrol more female students come next academic year.
He stressed the importance of encouraging more women to pursue business studies and announced plans to collaborate with deprived secondary schools in the area to promote enrolment.
He mentioned that the male awardees are 186, representing 61.59% with Female 116, representing 38.4%.
However, with enrolment, 58% are male and 42% are female.
“And we are confronted with the requirement by G-Tech to be comparative, so we have a lot of work to do to increase female enrolment.”
The event featured guest speaker, Joshua Motorti from the Ghana Chamber of Mines and Technology, who shared valuable insights on succeeding in the corporate world post-graduation, inspiring the students with his wisdom and advice.
He especially urged them to take lessons learnt in school seriously to help them develop strong communication skills.
Joshua Motorti directed the awardees to join communication studies classes or courses at the school to give them an added advantage in acquiring communication and presentation skills and being excellent team players.
Gracing the event, the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North, Kwamina Mintah Nyarku who donated 5,000 cedis and some soccer balls for the school.
Other sponsorships were from KPMG, ICAG, GCB Bank, CIMA, and ACCA.
Some special awards were awarded to the Best female graduating student with a CGPA of 3.928, Miss Malahu from the Human Resource Management Department, and the overall male best student with a CGPA of 3.9868 from the Department of Procurement and Supply Chain, Mr. Dery Ramsey.
This year’s Dean’s Award held its first edition of awarding students in the Postgraduate School of Business.
Some awards were given to Mr. Mawal Shaibu with a Master of Philosophy in Public Policy and Management with a CGPA of 3.92 and an award to Mr. Prince Chibu Darko with a Master of Philosophy in Public Policy with a CGPA of 3.89.
