The School of Allied Health Sciences of the University of Cape Coast, UCC has awarded 271 students during its Deans Awards ceremony held on Wednesday.
The awardees comprise all first-class students from the eight (8) departments under the school including, Optometry and Vision Science, Sports and Exercise Science, Health Information Management, Physician Assistant Studies, Imaging Technology and Sonography, Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, and Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics.
According to the Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences, Professor Desmond Omane Acheampong, the idea was to award every potential first-class student from levels 200 to 400.
He revealed that the awards have been instrumental in the recorded increase in students’ performance following suggestions from students and faculty to not just award the best students in class as in previous years.
“The number has increased in a sense that this year from level 200 to 400, we awarded almost 300 students and these 300 students are all in the first-class category. So, it tells you that it has actually motivated the students to work hard.”
Prof. Omane expressed hope that this year’s award will motivate other students to improve their academic performances.
“I believe next year you may even hit 400 because… more students are working hard to be recognized and that’s the essence of the award scheme,” he added.
As part of the ceremony, a Special Award for outstanding faculty and cognate members, as well as distinguished administrators were also awarded for their diverse contributions to teaching and learning at the school.
Prof. Omane Acheampong said the expansion of the award to faculty, administrators and cognate members is the recognition of their efforts to the development of academic success.
He indicated that this will continue as part of the awards scheme which may, in addition, recognize cleaners and all who play a role in the School.
Prof. Omane Acheampong encouraged other schools and colleges within the university to adopt this method to recognize faculty members to motivate them to give their best.
