A total of 9,828 fresh students comprising 9,059 undergraduates and 769 postgraduates have been admitted into the University of Cape Coast for the 2023/2024 academic year to pursue various programs offered by the university
Out of this figure, 4,920 are males and 4,139 females for the undergraduate students while the number of males stood at 474, and females 295 for postgraduate students.
Disclosing this at a virtual matriculation ceremony held on Saturday, 03 February 2024 at the studios of the Campus Broadcasting Services Centre of the University, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong indicated that the matriculation ceremony marks the former admission of students into the university and also provides students with opportunity to pledge their absolute allegiance to the university authorities.
“In this ceremony, you will take the matriculation oath that affirms your studentship status of the university. You then become bona fide junior members of this university and are therefore entitled to all the rights and privileges to which students of this university are enjoying”.
The Vice Chancelor also touted the achievements the University has made including academic excellence, evidenced by the outcome of the 2024 Times Higher Education World University ranking with the University of Cape coast sustaining its position as a top most ranked university in Ghana and West Africa and among the top ten universities in Africa.
The other successes include the Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Supply Chain Management’s conferment on UCC as one of its highest awards, the West African Institution of Excellence for the year 2023 in recognition of the steering performance of the university in the higher education landscape.
He said this global recognition of the high standards the University of Cape coast has set for itself enjoins all freshmen and women to live up to the core values of the university, namely academic excellence, empowerment, equality, ethical behaviour and environmental consciousness.
To this end, he assured the matriculants of the university’s commitment to provide an environment that will expose them to an amazing and a wide range of learning experiences and reiterated lecturers, scholars and researchers’ dedication to not only help them obtain the previous and enviable university of Cape coast degree but also to help expand their understanding of society and the world at large.
Professor Nyarko Boampong however admitted that the university has challenges with respect to students’ residential facilities on campus but pledged the university management’s commitment of doing everything possible to ensure that students experience a congenial atmosphere for both social and academic.
Speaking on disciplinary issues, he indicated that the University of Cape coast, just like any other university in the world, has rules and regulations not meant for the purposes of punishing students but to bring order and harmony needs in the university and make life and stay on campus enjoyable as well as enable students, staff and residents of the university to function effectively.

“Our rules and regulations have been collected in the following books, student’s handbook, academic programmes, policies and regulations for undergraduate studies and, academic policies and regulations for graduate studies. I urge you all to read these rules and regulations carefully, digest their contents and abide by them. You’ve come to this institution to study and obtain a degree and it is not our desire to send any of you home without achieving this dream. We as an institution are committed in helping you achieve your dream”, he emphasized.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Boampong encouraged the students to play their part by studying hard attend lectures regularly take quizzes seriously, complete take home assignments on time and participate actively in all learning activities.
