The University of Cape Coast has inaugurated the first advisory board for the centre for gender research, advocacy and documentation (CEGRAD) with a call on the members to give strategic direction to the Centre.
The Board has as its Chairman, Prof. Francis Eric Amoquandoh, provost of the College of Humanities and Legal Studies. Other members are Prof. Michael Adinortey, rep from the college of agriculture and natural sciences, UCC, Dr. Gerogina Yaa Oduro, the Director of the Centre, Lawyer Nana Anna Abaka Cann, from the Legal Affairs Unit of the University and Mr. George Appiah Sakyi from DOVVSU.
The rest are Ms. Richlove Amamoo from the department of Gender, a rep from the UNFPA, Mrs. Mary Ama Bawa a rep from the Campus Broadcasting Services Centre of the University, Ms. Catherine Antwi-Boasiako, GRASAG rep, Ms. Vera Wissio, SRC Rep and Ms. Mirian Danso Mensah from the school of economics as a member/secretary for the Board.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh noted that the administration of CEGRAD and management agree that there should be a board in place to exercise supervisory roles for the effective operation of the centre.
Speaking in her opening remarks on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, she expressed hope that the board will work as a team to deliver their mandates in making CEGRAD an enviable center for research and advocacy.
She said UCC’s gender policy ultimately portrays the position of the university on gender issues and thus will serve as a blueprint for gender responsiveness.
She added that ‘the Gender policy times in with international, national and institutional frameworks and instruments, including the sustainable development goals, committee on the elimination of discrimination against women (CEDAW) national gender policy for Ghana, and also the core values of the university.”
She, therefore, assured of the university management’s support through engagement and provision of resources that will enable the board to resolve all challenges they may encounter.
The Chairman of the Advisory Board, Prof. Francis Eric Amoquandoh who spoke on behalf of the Board, expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the confidence reposed in them.
He promised to uphold the highest form of integrity and with the support of his colleagues ensure that the Board lives up to its mandate.
The primary function of the advisory boards will be, to give strategic directions to the center. as well as promote and supervise research activities at the center. The board will also give policy directives, support in collaboration and partnership with other organizations and agencies, and also give general guidelines and directives for the operations of the center.
