The Directorate of University Health Services at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has been adjudged the best-performing health facility in the Central Region after scoring 98.7 per cent in the 2025 Peer Review exercise conducted by the Ghana Health Service.
The peer review, which involved 31 health facilities including Our Lady of Grace Hospital, Trauma and Specialist Hospital at Winneba, St. Luke Catholic Hospital, Brakwa Polyclinic, and Senya Polyclinic, evaluated hospitals on key performance indicators such as maternal and child health services, institutional maternal mortality, caesarean section rates, and data quality audit.
Speaking to ATL FM News after the exercise, Dr. James Kojo Prah, Director of the Directorate of University Health Services, attributed the hospital’s outstanding performance to strict adherence to healthcare standards and continuous improvement practices throughout the year.
He explained that the peer review process provides an opportunity for health facilities to assess each other and identify areas for improvement, which are then integrated into the hospital’s annual action plan and used as training points for staff.
The hospital, affiliated with the University of Cape Coast, has institutionalized a commitment to health sector standards, recognizing the high expectations placed on them as part of a prestigious academic institution.
“Therefore, we make sure that the standards that are expected of us, right from day one, at the beginning of the year, we put them into practice so that we give our patients the best of care,” Dr. James Prah added.
He acknowledged that despite the hospital’s success, challenges remain, particularly in infrastructure, equipment, and human resources. He appealed to stakeholders for support to enhance service delivery.
Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Dr. Prah commended the hospital’s staff for their dedication and encouraged the university community to patronize the facility’s services.
“In fact, we are going to celebrate. We will pat our staff on their back for the hard work they have done, and I want to use this also to tell, especially the university community, that this hospital has something good to offer.
The Peer Review initiative, spearheaded by the Regional Health Directorate, seeks to promote accountability, collaboration, and best practices among health institutions across the region.
