The Department of Communication Studies at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has launched its maiden Electronic Newsletter (E-Newsletter) with the goal of training students to leave school employable.
As the act of writing characterizes the courses that are taught in the Department, the E-Newsletter would also encourage students to practice what they learn in the classroom.
Launching the Newsletter, the Head of Department of the Department of Communication Studies, Professor William Kodom Gyasi who explained the motive behind the E-Newsletter noted it is to ensure students graduate as top-notch writers and communicators.
“You know, at the Department of Communication Studies, we expect that when it comes to speaking and writing, you are on top of issues. No wonder we have lecturers in the department who work assiduously to ensure you attain this height. So, a team in the department decided that let’s find ways of ensuring that students go out top-notch when it comes to writing and communication. And what they decided to do was to put a newsletter together,” he told the students.
Prof Gyasi thus urged students of the Department of Communication Studies to take advantage of the e-newsletter by contributing to subsequent editions.
He maintained that by so doing, they will be sharpening their skills in writing and also “when you go out there and you tell somebody, I’m from Department of Communication Studies, University of Cape Coast, people will be proud and would like to associate with you”
Meanwhile, according to some students of the department, apart from the e-newsletter promoting creative writing, they believe it will help promote the visibility of the department.
Title of Newsletter
The E-Newsletter which is titled “The Dew” was put together by Dr. Daniel Edem Adzovie, a lecturer at the department, Miss Eunice Eshun, a principal research assistant at the department, and Master Andrew Donkor, a National Service Person. They serve as the editorial team.
At the launch, Dr. Adzovie who is the lead of the editorial team told ATL FM NEWS, the reason behind the title of the Newsletter saying “We had a team and we were tasked to come up with a number of names and then we threw the idea to the whole department to come up with names.”
He said the team shortlisted the names that came and subsequently placed them before the faculty.
“And the decision was that we were choosing ‘The Dew’ Newsletter because as the name sounds, due gives freshness. It is something that you come across very early in the morning. And as a newsletter coming from the Department of Communication Studies, we are saying that we are providing freshness in terms of news, in terms of experiences, in terms of students’ output” Dr Edem Adzovie explained.
Sections of Newsletter
The Newsletter has three major sections comprising the section for the Main Newsletter, the Student’s Corner, and a platform for Alumni.
The section for the Main Newsletter – is to give news about events in the department.
The Students’ Corner – a platform for the students to write, be it poems, news to various investigative pieces, opinions, and all they are supposed to publish there.
The Platform for Alumni – is a section created because of the Department’s desire to be in touch with the alumni.
