To promote the security of students and guarantee their comfort, the Management of the University of Cape Coast led by the Vice Chancellor together with the Student’s Representative Council has cut sod for the commencement of three projects.
These projects which are expected to be completed within six months after its commencement include two bus terminals and the remodeling of the University’s East Gate.
The construction of these projects is the initiative of the Students’ Representative Council who will also be funding the projects.
Meanwhile, in a short ceremony to cut sod for the beginning of the projects, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong assured the SRC of Management’s utmost support to see to the successful completion of the projects.
“So as management we are happy that we have a close working relationship with our students and we will also support them to undertake this project. So that in all we’ll be able to uplift the image of our dear University.” He said
He said the SRC through support to the university has contributed to building the SRC Hall and has supported management in doing many activities on campus.
“This year, the 60th anniversary, they have also participated and we have enjoyed a good working relationship with them. So anytime we have projects we undertake, we discuss with them and they support us.” He continued.
The vice chancellor, therefore, said it is his hope that the contractor will attach seriousness to the project, especially amid the depreciating Ghana cedi currency.
He said “We know that now our money, the cedi, is depreciating, so the longer it takes to construct the building, the higher the cost of construction… So we want to make sure that you work with the contractor so that everything will be done accurately and the university may not incur more debt.”
On his part, the former SRC president, Christopher Dadson under whose administration the projects were initiated, indicated that the decision to undertake these projects is also for the SRC to contribute to the developmental agenda of the University.
“The SRC also started with the University and next academic year the SRC also will be turning 60. And so as the 58th SRC President, during my time, I had a discussion with my executives to start these projects to remodel the University frontage, to put up a shuttle stop around Kwame Nkrumah Hall and also another shuttle stop between SRC and Superannuation Hostels to aid our students. Each of the projects is of importance security-wise and also for the comfort of our students.”
He further explained that the remodeling of the University’s East Gate when completed will help solve the improper packing of vehicles by drivers who ply the Cape Coast – Takoradi highway as well ensuring the safety of students who use the highway.
