Counsellors from the University of Cape Coast Department of Counselling and Guidance Centre have emphasized the critical role of time management and rest in enhancing productivity and reducing stress.
Speaking on ATL FM’s ATLANTIC WAVE, Priscilla Amankwanor, a Counsellor at the Department of Counselling and Guidance Centre, UCC highlighted how setting daily goals and managing time effectively can lead to better work output and a balanced life.
“It’s important because you are planning and organizing your time. Unlike someone who doesn’t plan their time, you become more efficient in your work output. You become more productive because you are able to complete tasks on time, deliver assignments on time, and meet deadlines,” Madam Amankwanor explained.
She also noted that effective time management helps reduce stress by allowing individuals to know what to do at every point in time, thus striking a good work-life balance.
“You don’t mix the two together. You know what time to apportion for work and what time for your personal activities. Some people end up doing personal activities during work hours and vice versa, which is not the best,” she added.
She advised having a flexible schedule and avoiding multitasking as strategies for managing time effectively noting that “Have a flexible schedule, one that is not packed with activities. As you move from one activity to the next, include breaks and rest periods. Avoid multitasking, as it often leads to being busy without producing results. When you focus on completing one activity at a time, you become more efficient and productive.”
Additionally, Anna Lovina Kwofie, another counsellor at the Centre, stressed the importance of prioritizing rest and avoiding procrastination.
“Before you begin your day, set a goal and prioritize your activities based on urgency and importance. Schedule time for each activity and give yourself breaks. Procrastination hinders effective time management, so understand why you are procrastinating and set personal deadlines to keep yourself on track.”
Mrs. Kwofie highlighted the value of breaking tasks into smaller, manageable parts and setting personal deadlines. “Sometimes it’s good to take a break and rest. Resting and breaking your schedule is also part of time management. If we don’t find time to rest, it can lead to burnout. So, plan, break, and rest.”
Both counsellors emphasized that effective time management, along with regular breaks and rest, are essential for maintaining productivity and well-being. Students and professionals alike are encouraged to adopt these strategies to improve their efficiency and reduce stress.
