The National Chairman of Disability Desk of the National Democratic Congress, Dr. Richard Fiadomor has commended the University of Cape Coast for appointing a visually impaired lecturer.
He emphasized that the NDC, National Disability Desk is pleased with the appointment since it is the first time in academia that a visually impaired person has been appointed a lecturer.
He also extended his congratulations to the appointed lecturer, Mr Carruthers Tetteh.
“It is a commendable thing that the VC has done. So we are congratulating our brother for his appointment and commending the University of Cape Coast for seeing value in the people living with disability and asking him to help the Law Faculty of the University,” he continued.
Mr. Carruthers Tetteh, whose appointment took effect in December 2023, teaches Criminal Law and Ghana Legal System after graduating in 2023 with a Master of Laws in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).
Dr. Fiadomor mentioned that upon learning of the news, they expressed pleasure and gratitude by writing a letter to thank the University and offer congratulations to their colleague.
The National Chairman of Disability Desk of the NDC however, expressed profound dissatisfaction with the government’s decision to cancel toll booth operations nationwide.
In an interview ATLFM monitored on OKAY FM, Dr. Richard Fiadomor emphasized that the toll booth not only generated revenue for the state but also provided accessible employment opportunities for individuals living with disabilities.
He noted that cancelling this operation should have involved plans for rehabilitating, resettling, and finding employment for those affected.
However, he opined that the absence of such considerations highlights the government’s lack of disability-friendly policies.
“You should have also thought of how those people are going to be rehabilitated, how they are going to be resettled and how they are going to be involved in gainful employment. But you will see that this is a government that is not disability friendly.”
Dr. Richard Fiadomor stressed that the risk of disability applies to anyone at any time, highlighting the need for responsible and empathetic governance for people with disabilities.
He, therefore, expressed concern over the government’s actions regarding the toll booth, deeming them irresponsible.
Additionally, he highlighted that the fund intended for the disabled has become increasingly politicized, drifting from its intended purpose.
