The College of Distance Education of the University of Cape Coast with its welfare association has made a donation of some food items and toiletries to its students enrolled on the distance education programme at the Nsawam Medium Prisons in the Eastern Region.
The donation, according to Dr. Felix Kumedzro, chairman of the Welfare Association of CODE-UCC was also to support other inmates of the correctional facility in light of the need to boost their immunity in the wake of the Covid19 pandemic.
He said the donation has been part of the institution’s annual donation however “this one happens to coincide with the COVID-19. We planned to come here in April during the Easter holidays but because of the lock down we could not come.”
The items worth about thirteen thousand (13,000) Ghana cedis included bags of rice, boxes of tomato paste, toiletries among others.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Director of Prisons and the Regional Commander, the Eastern Regional PRO of the Ghana Prisons Service, DSP Adamu Abdul Latif expressed profound gratitude to the university for the kind gesture shown them.
He noted that the items will impact the feeding of inmates.
He added that “As it stands now it is of public knowledge that the feeding rate of inmates is 1cedi 80 pesewas per day and that is not adequate, so these things come to support us in actually meeting their feeding demand.”
“Indeed it is going to help us in boosting the immunity and quality of food of the inmates.” He added and assured that the donation will be used for the purpose it is to serve.
Speaking on how the inmates are coping during the COVID-19, DSP Abdul Latif noted that the health team at the facility has put in place an extensive educational programme for both inmates and officers about the COVID 19.
This helped in reducing the anxiety in inmates and officers when Ghana actually recorded its first case.
According to him, the prison has not recorded any case of the COVID 19 yet.
