The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has maintained it position on the Times Higher Education Ranking for the fourth consecutive time.
Director of the Directorate of Research Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC) at UCC, Professor David Teye Doku who confirmed this to ATLFM expressed excitement about this achievement.
“This is truly heartwarming news and we are very happy to celebrate this achievement,” he said.
On the 21st Times Higher Education Rankings for 2025, UCC was ranked as the top University in Ghana, the top University in West Africa, and among the top 15 universities in Africa.
Explaining how UCC has maintained this feat for four years in a row, Prof, Doku cited quality research at the University as a key factor.
“The World University ranking by the Times Higher Education uses about 18 indicators which are classified into five categories. For the past years, we’ve been doing so well, especially in the area of research quality…I think that is what is doing the trick.”
He however acknowledged that other areas need continuous work to sustain this feat.
“We need to continue to work hard in the area that we are doing well. There are other areas that we need to work on a bit more. For example, the ratio of students to academic staff, our research environment. Overall, we need to work a little bit.”
Professor Doku highlighted that the rankings serve as a valuable diagnostic tool, helping the university assess its performance in its core missions of teaching, research, and outreach.
He expressed that “these rankings set the university to do its own diagnostics of how it is performing on this. So, we are happy, but there is also the need to do more.”
Barely two weeks ago, the University of Cape Coast achieved another milestone in the prestigious U.S. News and World Report Global Universities Rankings.
UCC was ranked as the best (No. 1) University in Ghana, and among the best in Africa and globally.
This ranking system assessed over 2,250 universities worldwide for the 2024-2025 rankings.
Professor Doku described this as a great achievement.
“Having been ranked by two prestigious university ranking agencies as top University; we are number one in Ghana, number one in West Africa, and among the top 15 universities.”
