Two people were reportedly shot during the installation of Osabarima Atiabisa Kantinka Pobi Asomaning, a parallel chief in the Eastern Region‘s Asamankese.
The two were spotted bathed in blood, according to JoyNews journalist Edwin Kofi Siaw.
The enstoolment ritual was marred by occasional gunfire and opposition from some villagers thought to be adherents of rival leader Osabarima Adu Darko III.
Whilst some residents pelted stones at thugs who facilitated security for the ceremony, others fled the tense scene.
Before the event, gun-wielding thugs violently entered the main palace, endangering lives and property.
The presence of a police squad calmed the heated scenario, allowing the enstoolment procedure to proceed.
Traditional ceremonies were conducted by certain Chiefs and elders, including the slaughtering of a sheep and the pouring of libation.
Kantinka, Osabarima In a speech after his enstoolment, Pobi Asomaning said that his legitimacy has been supported by the Koforidua High Court and the Akyem-Abuakwa Traditional Council.
“I want to tell my people to exercise restraint, we don’t need any disturbances. I pledged to use lawful means to resolve this issue and take what rightfully belongs to me and that’s exactly what I have done. Today is a very important day for us in Asamankese because this issue has been lingering for long. They lost all their cases at the High Court. They proceeded to the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs where they lost an appeal.
A protracted chieftaincy dispute between the two claimants has led to brewing tension in the area.
Kantinka, Osabarima According to Pobi Asomaning, a High Court and the Judicial Committee of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs have ruled that his opponent, Osabarima Adu Darko III, is not the rightful occupant of the stool and cannot claim it.
He said that he has alerted all appropriate authorities, including the Inspector General of Police, about the rival chief’s “continuous occupation of the palace” and has petitioned the Presidency to intervene.
