The Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned alleged acts of police brutality against students of the Tamale Technical University.
In a statement dated September 16, 2025, and signed by the party’s National Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha, the group described the incident as deeply troubling.
“It is unacceptable for the police to use arbitrary force on the students and their leaders,” the statement said. “The police could have acted more professionally to de-escalate tensions without resorting to violence.”
The NPP Youth Wing urged calm among the student body and school authorities, stressing the need for dialogue as the best approach to resolving the matter, noting that “We encourage dialogue as the most constructive way forward. Violence has no place in a democratic society,” the statement added.
The group also called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Northern Regional Police Command to ensure accountability by taking action against the officers involved.
“When our youth are subjected to violence, Ghana’s democratic values are undermined. The officers responsible must be held accountable,” the NPP Youth Wing stressed.
The alleged incident occurred when police officers were deployed to the Tamale Technical University campus to control a student protest. Reports suggest that the demonstration, which started peacefully, escalated after security personnel allegedly used excessive force, leading to confrontations between the students and the police.
This development has sparked widespread concern, with student groups and civil society organizations calling for a thorough investigation into the matter.
