New Fare Hike to Take Effect August 8, 2025
Commuters across Ghana will be paying more for public transportation starting Friday, August 8, 2025, following a 20% fare increment announced by the Road Transport Operators.
The adjustment affects all categories of public transport, including shared taxis, intra-city “trotro” services, long-distance intercity travel, and haulage transport.
Why the Hike? Operators Cite Cost Burdens
According to the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), the decision stems from mounting operational costs that transport operators say have become unsustainable. Specifically, the fare hike was attributed to:
- The lack of market response to a 15% fare reduction implemented in May 2025. Prices of spare parts and services remained unchanged, rendering the reduction ineffective for operators.
- A newly introduced GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy, resulting in an approximate 8% increase in fuel prices.
- Rising vehicle maintenance costs due to worsening road infrastructure nationwide.
“The upward adjustment has become necessary to preserve the viability of transport services amidst persistent increases in input costs,” the Council stated.
Enforcement Measures Announced
Transport unions have directed all operators to strictly implement the new fares beginning August 8. Fare lists must be clearly displayed at all loading terminals to prevent disputes and ensure transparency.

Drivers have also been advised to avoid arbitrary fare charges. Instead, they are to adhere strictly to the approved fare schedules.
Public Urged to Cooperate
The Road Transport Operators appealed to commuters, drivers, and the general public to cooperate with the implementation process to ensure a smooth transition.
“We understand the challenges passengers face, but the fare adjustment is critical to maintaining reliable and safe transport services,” the statement added.
