Landslide Triggered by Heavy Rain Wreaks Havoc on Rail Line
A tragic train derailment in southwest Germany has claimed the lives of three people and left at least 41 others injured after a landslide—triggered by an overflowing sewage shaft—swept through a railway line on Sunday, July 27, 2025.
Authorities say the accident occurred between Riedlingen and Munderkingen, near Stuttgart, following days of heavy rainfall that destabilized the terrain beside the tracks.
Victims Include Train Driver and Railway Staff
According to local prosecutors, the victims include the train driver, a railway employee, and one passenger. The regional passenger train, which was en route from Sigmaringen to Ulm, derailed around 18:10 local time with approximately 100 people on board.
Images from the scene show carriages overturned and emergency responders navigating through forested terrain strewn with fallen trees.
Federal Response and Ongoing Investigation
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his condolences to the victims’ families in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), adding that he was in close contact with interior and transport ministers to ensure comprehensive emergency support.

Police in Ulm confirmed that at least two carriages derailed and that rail operations in the affected area would remain suspended as investigations and cleanup efforts begin on Monday.
“The cause of the derailment is under intensive investigation. The section of the railway remains closed for safety reasons,” police officials said.
Operator Expresses Condolences
Train operator Deutsche Bahn released a statement expressing sympathy:
“Our thoughts and sympathies are with the victims and everyone who now has to process this experience.”
Emergency crews, including firefighters and medical teams, were swiftly dispatched and worked late into the evening to rescue passengers and secure the site.
