Following an accident involving a boat in the Sene East District of the Bono East Region, eight schoolchildren have drowned in the Volta Lake.
The victims were among 20 students traveling by boat from Atikagome to Wayokope, where their school is located, according to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).
Twelve students made it to safety by swimming.
According to NADMO, the eight fatalities include five boys and three girls between the ages of five and twelve.

Ibrahim Wudonyim, the Sene East District Director of NADMO, informed Graphic Online that before they arrived at the scene of the disaster, some members of the local community and Marine Police had been able to retrieve all eight bodies from the Lake.
He described how the incident took place about seven in the morning on Tuesday and how the boat capsized midstream.
The dead have been sent to the fishing community of Atikagome.
The incident shocked, terrified, and plunged the community into mourning.
