Muscat became head coach in October 2013 after Ange Postecoglou left. He felt a lot of pressure right away. Even though he won his first game, staying consistent was tough. Things got worse when Melbourne Victory lost back-to-back games, each with a score of 5-0. Fans and critics began to question his ability to lead.
A Harsh Introduction to Coaching
Before becoming the head coach, Muscat was an assistant and a caretaker. He moved from being a player to a manager quickly. This left him with little time to adjust. Archie Thompson, a Melbourne Victory legend who played under Muscat, shared memories of those tough early days.
“It was hard for him to find his way early on,” Thompson said. “I remember losing to Wellington 5-0, then another 5-0 loss to Sydney FC on Australia Day.”
Those heavy defeats made people wonder if Muscat was the right choice. Thompson noticed that he sometimes had a hard time keeping his emotions in check during tough times.
Learning Through Failure
After those bad losses, Muscat called a team meeting. “He said, ‘If I’m going down, you all are coming with me,’” recalled Thompson. This statement left the players unsure about their coach.
But Thompson believes this tough time helped Muscat grow. “It was a real lesson for him. He had to rethink how he handled things. After that, he was amazing.”
Muscat changed his coaching style, finding a good mix of discipline and guidance. His efforts paid off in the 2014/15 season when he led Melbourne Victory to a double win, earning his reputation as a great coach.
A Ruthless Competitor On and Off the Pitch
Muscat’s fierce playing style showed in his coaching too. Thompson mentioned he wouldn’t want to face Muscat on the field.
“He was a beast out there,” Thompson said. “He often walked a thin line between right and wrong.”
Despite his tough demeanor, Muscat grew into a fantastic manager. His early struggles have led him to great success. Now his coaching career stands for hard work and victory. Tough Love Turns Coaching Career.
