Day two of the discussion on the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy begins later today, on Wednesday, November 24, 2021.
The discussion began on Monday, November 23, 2021, with MPs discussing financial, environmental, and scientific policy.
Members of the House will discuss health, trade, and industry issues, as well as communications, mining, and energy legislation.
The government intends to earn more than 100 billion Ghana cedis in income and spend 137 billion Ghana cedis on key programs and projects.
After the completion of the discussion by the leaders of the house on Friday, November 26, 2021, the 2022 Budget and Economic Policy Statement will be adopted or rejected.
Meanwhile, the Minority has promised to fight the government’s proposal to put a 1.75 percent surcharge on all electronic transactions.
According to Cassiel Ato Forson, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Finance Committee, the idea would cause unimaginable misery for Ghanaians.
According to him, the Minority would, therefore “stand behind Ghanaians in opposition to the momo tax.”
“This is a super regressive tax that will impose unbearable hardship, pain, and suffering on poor Ghanaians. We are aware that most traders and ordinary Ghanaians use Mobile money wallet as savings account, therefore, any attempt to impose a tax on mobile money transactions will be a tax on savings, a disincentive to save, which should never be encouraged,” he said.
