Kofi Kapito, the Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency, believes that any increase in energy prices will be untimely.
Despite acknowledging the need for a tariff boost, he also encouraged the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) to concentrate its efforts on obtaining restitution for consumers who have lost electrical devices as a result of the recent power outages.
“The timing is very wrong considering what the Ghanaian is going through when it comes to these recent power outages. The outages are the concern of the Ghanaian. I think if the outages are solved or resolved, we can look at these non-tariffs that ECG is proposing,” Mr. Kapito said in a Citi News interview.
“PURC [Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission] should look at what happened with the recent power outages to see if they can reimburse Ghanaians who could have had their equipment destroyed,” he said.
The Electricity Company of Ghana has made a plea for a tariff increase (ECG).
In the face of the emerging pattern of unreliable power supply, ECG claims that it needs a tariff increase to support its operating activities.
The increase was due to factors such as the Ghana Cedi-US dollar exchange rate, inflation, market forecasting, and energy costs.
The new plan will only become a reality if the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission approves it.
