On Tuesday, TikTok announced the launch of its first image-to-video AI feature, named “TikTok AI Alive.” This new tool enables users to transform static photos into videos within TikTok Stories.
Accessible exclusively through TikTok’s Story Camera, the feature uses AI to create short videos enhanced with movement and creative effects. For example, a photo of a sky and ocean might be animated to show shifting hues and drifting clouds, accompanied by the sound of crashing waves. Users can also animate group selfies to emphasize gestures and expressions.

This launch follows TikTok’s introduction of an in-app text-to-image AI generator a few years ago. While competitors like Instagram and Snapchat offer text-to-image features, TikTok is now allowing users to create videos directly from images. Snapchat has indicated it will soon introduce AI-generated videos from images as well.
Videos created with AI Alive will carry an AI-generated label, and the content will include C2PA metadata to indicate it is AI-generated, even if shared outside TikTok.
In a blog post, TikTok emphasized its commitment to safety with AI innovations, stating that the technology undergoes multiple trust and safety checks. Users can report any videos they believe violate the app’s rules, and TikTok performs a final safety review before an AI Alive story is published.
To create an AI Alive video, users can open the Story Camera, tap the blue plus button on the Inbox or Profile page, select a photo from their Story Album, and then access the AI Alive icon on the photo edit page.
