UCC appoints new Vice-Chancellor, Registrar

The University of Cape Coast council has appointed Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong as Vice-Chancellor and Mr Jeff Teye Emmanuel Onyame as Registrar. The appointment of the two takes effect from 1st August 2020.

Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong will be taking over from Prof Joseph Ghartey Ampiah whose term of office expires on 31st July 2020. He is currently the Provost of the College of Health and Allied Sciences at the University of Cape Coast.

Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong is a Pharmacist and Biomedical Scientist. He became Provost of the College of Health and Allied Sciences after completing his three-year term as the Dean of School of Biological Sciences, all in the University of Cape Coast. He headed the Department of Biomedical and Forensic Sciences for five years prior to becoming the Dean.

He led the Department to establish the following programmes; Certificate in Herbal Medicine, B.Sc. Biomedical Sciences, B.Sc. Forensic Sciences and, MPhil and PhD in Drug Discovery and Toxicology.

He also promoted the establishment of functional Laboratory to advance research in the School of Biological Sciences. As Dean, he ensured the renovation and refurbishment of other laboratories, planting of new seedlings in the Botanic garden and enhanced International collaborations.

As Provost, he has enthusiastically championed the establishment of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences which will run Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) Programme.

Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast

Prof Boampong’s research interests cover multidisciplinary areas, a reflection of his diverse professional training in the area of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy. He has more than fifty publications in peer reviewed Journals. He is a fellow and also a member of Academic Board of the Ghana College of Pharmacists.

Prof. Boampong has taught Parasitology, and supervised undergraduate and postgraduate (M.Phil and PhD) students with diverse backgrounds. He is also an external examiner to other universities in Ghana.

Prof. Boampong is a product of Tokyo Women’s Medical University, Japan, where he obtained his PhD in Tropical Medicine (2004-2007) as Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) scholar.

He did his post-doctorate research at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India as CV Raman Scholar (2011). 

He also obtained his M. Phil degree in Zoology (Applied Parasitology) from the University of Ghana (1995-1999). He has B. Pharm degree from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (1997-2001) and, B.Sc. degree and Dip. Ed (1988-1992) from University of Cape Coast. He has taken many other professional courses abroad and has presented his research findings at different international conferences.

Mr Jeff Teye Emmanuel Onyame has also been appointed as the Registrar for the University. He takes over from incumbent registrar Mr John Kofi Nyan whose term of office expires on 31st July 2020. He is currently the Director, Directorate of Academic Affairs at the University of Cape Coast.

Jeff Teye Emmanuel Onyame holds a Master of Philosophy (Administration in Higher Education), and a Bachelor of Arts (Secretaryship) in addition to a Diploma in Education from the University of Cape Coast.

He also holds a Certificate of French Language Proficiency from the Centre International de Recherche et d’Etude de Langues, Village du Benin, Lome, Togo. His research interests are in Staff Recruitment and Retention, Academic Management and Student Welfare.

Mr. Jeff Teye Onyame, newly appointed Registrar for the University of Cape Coast

Mr. Onyame is a Professional Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Administrators and Management Consultants (CIAMC) of Ghana; a Professional Member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE); and an Affiliate of the Institute of Public Relations (IPR), Ghana.

He is also a Member of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and has worked as a professional university administrator at the University of Cape Coast for over 27 years.

He is results-oriented, hardworking, committed to duty, pragmatic and an excellent team player with strengths in the areas of management and supervision, having successfully led and managed change in the various positions he has held at the University of Cape Coast.

He is bilingual and has led many discussions involving the University in collaborations with the French Embassy and other Francophone institutions.

 Mr. Onyame has served and continues to serve (either as Secretary, Member or Chairman) on various statutory Boards and Committees of the University, including the Academic Board; Academic Planning and Management Committee; Board of the School of Graduate Studies; University of Cape Coast Students’ Financial Support Committee; University of Cape Coast Confucius Institute Board; Affiliated Colleges of Education Board; Administration Appointments and Promotions Committee; and the Committee on the Amendment of the University of Cape Coast Law, PNDC Law 278. He was Secretary to the Cape Coast Technical University Search Committee for Vice-Chancellor.
