Can This Link Help Australia?

The Socceroos have two big World Cup qualifying games coming up. Their chances of getting straight into the 2026 tournament are on the line. Tony Popovic only took over as coach last October, but these matches could make or break his time with the team – and Australia’s hopes of going straight to the World Cup. The Unexpected Link That Could Help Australia.

Right now, Australia’s second in their group in the third qualifying round, just one point ahead of China. They play China in their second game, but first, they’re up against Indonesia in Sydney. Only the top two teams automatically qualify for the World Cup. The teams in third and fourth place? They have to play extra games.

Is Popovic Feeling the Heat?

Australia’s had a rough time in the third round, with only one win – Popovic’s first game against China. Some of his player choices have been a surprise, with a few experienced guys left out. So, people are expecting him to get good results.

Even though some people are unsure about Popovic, Socceroos legend Mark Schwarzer is backing him. He likes the coach’s no-nonsense style. Schwarzer thinks Popovic’s strict selection keeps the players sharp, making them fight for their spot.

He’s got them on their toes, no one’s guaranteed a spot, Schwarzer said on The Optus Sport Football Podcast.

Schwarzer thinks Popovic’s willing to drop players who aren’t performing could help Australia. But he also says the Socceroos need at least four points from these next two games to stay in line for automatic qualification.

Four points minimum, he said. They have to beat Indonesia at home or they don’t deserve to qualify directly. The Unexpected Link That Could Help Australia.

The Connection That Might Just Help

The game against China is going to be tough. But someone unexpected could give Popovic and the team a boost: Kevin Muscat. He used to play for the Socceroos (46 times!) and now he coaches Shanghai Port in the Chinese Super League. He’s won back-to-back league titles. He knows all about the Chinese league players.

Michael Bridges, who played in the Premier League and A-League, thinks Popovic could use his relationship with Muscat to get some important insight on the Chinese team.

He’s got the with Kevin Muscat over there doing so well. He’ll know all of the players, and I think he can rely on getting an incredible scouting report, Bridges said.

Popovic is known for being very prepared. and Bridges is sure Muscat will help out, especially with scouting and travel.

Popa is thorough and professional. I’m sure that Muscat will be helping him out, he added. You’ve got to use every to help you. It’s not easy over there, even if they’re at the bottom of the group. The Unexpected Link That Could Help Australia.

Problems with A-League Players?

Bridges also defended Popovic, saying it’s hard because the A-League is mostly a development league. It helps young players move to Europe, but it means there aren’t as many experienced players for the national team.

I really like what Popa’s doing and saying. I think the tough job from now is obviously with the A-League players, Bridges said.

He knows it’s important to develop young players, but it makes Popovic’s job harder than it was for previous coaches who had lots of players in Europe.

The A-League has become a development league for most clubs to get youngsters into Europe. It makes it harder for Popovic not having as much experience in the squad, he said.

Still, Bridges thinks getting four points from the next two games is doable and necessary for the Socceroos. These games will decide if Australia goes to the World Cup, and what happens with Popovic as coach.
