The Government of Ghana has assured in providing full support to give a befitting burial to the late Ghanaian professional footballer, Christian Atsu.
Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia made this revelation on Sunday night during a short solemn ceremony held on the tarmac of the Terminal 2 of the Kotoka International Airport to receive the mortal remains of the Chelsea footballer.
“But as the good Lord says in the good book that from him we came and to him shall we return. We pray that the soul of Christian Atsu rests in perfect peace in the bosom of the Lord and I will like to say that the state will be fully involved with the family in providing him with a befitting burial,” he said.
The vice president also sent condolences to the family, the Ghana Supporters Union and the entire Ghanaian population for the deep loss the country and the entire football fraternity have faced following the death of Christian Atsu.
“I would like to extend my condolences to all of them [Atsu’s siblings] and the entire family for this deep loss. I would also like to extend my condolences to the footballing fraternity. Atsu played for the Black Stars and he was much loved. We will surely miss him. I will like to extend my condolences to the Ghana Supporters Union and to all Ghanaians for this loss. It is a painful loss, a very painful one” he said.
Present with the Vice President to receive the remains of Christian Atsu was the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, and the Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, Evans Bobie Opoku, members of the football community, led by the General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Prosper Harrison Addo, and his deputy in charge of national teams, Alex Asante.
Ghana received the mortal remains of Christian Atsu which was draped in the country’s national flag on February 19th at about 7:30 pm.
This was a day after the Ghanaian football winger was confirmed dead when his lifeless body was discovered under the rabble 12 days after the turkey earthquake.
The 7.8-magnitude quake in southeastern Turkey and northern Syria passed 43,000 on Friday.
