The Samira Empowerment & Humanitarian Projects (SEHP) has successfully organised a breast cancer screening and counselling session for women in the Central Region, as part of its ongoing commitment to women’s health and empowerment.
The health screening which drew participation from women across the region, aimed to promote early detection and break the stigma surrounding breast cancer.
Addressing participants, the Founder of SEHP, Mrs. Samira Bawumia emphasized the importance of self-awareness and timely medical intervention.
Mrs. Bawumia explained that her foundation chose the Central Region for the health screening because the region holds a special place in her heart, having been born, raised, and completed her secondary education here.
“Stressing on the urgency of the issue, she noted that approximately 4,500 women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually in Ghana, with nearly half succumbing to the disease due to late detection. She further revealed that six women die from breast cancer every single day in the country.

Mrs. Bawumia who is the wife of the former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, noted that women play a vital role in society as nurturers, leaders, and contributors to economic and social development and therefore, protecting their health is essential not only for their well-being but also for the strength and progress of communities.
“Breast cancer remains a significant threat, and it is crucial to raise awareness about prevention and early detection to safeguard women from this disease” she added.
Mrs. Bawumia called on women to make regular hospital visits for screening and encouraged attendees to spread the message within their communities.
“We must end the stigma and silence around breast cancer. Women battling this disease deserve our support, compassion, and action,” she stated.
She also appealed to the men to encourage their wives and loved ones to undergo screening, stressing that breast cancer can affect anyone and early detection saves lives.
